We all know exercise is good for us for many reasons. Below is a reminder of those awesome benefits that exercise provides us:
Benefits of exercising
Research shows that, exercise and proper diet together produces a healthy lifestyle that can maintain the “prevention and management of chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, coronary heart disease, osteoporosis, obesity, mental health, colon cancers, stroke, and back injury.
Multiple studies have now shown that people who maintain appropriate body fitness, using judicious regimens of exercise and weight control, have the additional benefit of prolonged life. Especially between the ages of 50 and 70, studies have shown mortality to be 3 times less in the most fit people than in the least fit. (resource: Guyton and Hall)
But why does body fitness prolong life?
Body fitness and weight control greatly reduce
- cardiovascular disease, heart attacks, brain strokes, and kidney disease. This results from (1) maintenance of moderately lower blood pressure and (2) reduced blood cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein along with increased high-density lipoprotein.
- recover from acute illness faster as these people have more reserves in their body, stronger organs, better functioning organs (lung, heart, colon, liver, kidney), and better immune system.
- reduce the risk for several chronic metabolic disorders associated with obesity such as insulin resistance and type II diabetes, because it improve insulin sensitivity and reduce/eliminate the need for insulin treatment with type II diabetes.
- reduce the risk for several types of cancers, including breast and prostate cancer, due to the reduction in obesity.
- improvement in performance at work, sports, and relationships
- improve mental strength and clarity
